UN Says Sustainable Forest Management Can Create New Jobs

In an upcoming report to be released next Monday, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Administration states, “Ten million new ‘green jobs’ can be created by investing in sustainable forest management.”

In a press release, the FAO cites an International Labour Organization report which projects an increase of 20 million to 50 million unemployed individuals worldwide in 2009, in relation to 2007 numbers.

To combat this the report states, “Increased investment in forestry could provide jobs in forest management, agroforestry and farm forestry, improved fire management, … restoring degraded forests and planting new ones.”

Ya’axche is committed to these principles and has advocated for, and created local jobs in forest management and restoration, agroforestry, and environmental education for over 10 years.

This story has also been covered by the UN News Centre, CNN and various other news services.
